Foods for Ostara in the southern hemisphere, especially in Australia, are often overlooked, but they hold powerful symbolism for the season.
As the earth begins to awaken, we celebrate the balance of light and dark with fresh, seasonal foods.
The classics, like honey, eggs, spring greens, and seeds, embody the themes of fertility, growth, and renewal. You can easily adjust these foods for Ostara to suit your environment and tastes, however, as everyone is different when it comes to diet.
Whether you bake crackers or make some mayo, these dishes connect you to the season’s energy, nourishing both body and spirit as the world blooms with new life.
Foods for Ostara
All Things Honey
Honey embodies the sweetness of life and the blossoming of new beginnings at Ostara. Now is the time I’ve drained the hives for the upcoming season, gathering this golden nectar to celebrate the turn of the wheel. Drizzle it over fresh bread, mix it into teas, or use it to sweeten cakes and pastries. This honey symbolises abundance and connection to the earth’s cycles. Pair it with nuts or fruits for a naturally sweet and nourishing treat.
Spring Greens
Fresh greens like spinach, lettuce, and dandelion greens burst with vitality at Ostara. Incorporate them into salads, soups, or sautés to symbolise the return of life. Pair them with citrus or vinaigrettes to balance the crisp, earthy flavours.
Seasonal Fruits
Fruits such as strawberries, oranges, and mulberries symbolise the sweetness of life and renewal. Enjoy them fresh or incorporate them into pies, tarts, or compotes to celebrate the abundance of spring. Their tangy flavours reflect the vibrant energy of the season.
Egg-cellent
Yes, the title was cheesy, I don’t apologise. Eggs represent fertility and new beginnings, perfectly suited for Ostara celebrations. Hard-boiled, baked into quiches, or made into mayonnaise, they bring the energy of creation to your table. Add fresh herbs and spring vegetables to enhance the flavours.
Seed-Based Foods
Seeds represent potential and growth, a key theme of Ostara. Create delicious seed crackers that are both gluten-free and keto-friendly! These crunchy crackers pair wonderfully with homemade dandelion pesto, enhancing the earthy, vibrant flavours of the season. Enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or chia puddings as snacks or meal additions, as these tiny powerhouses hold the promise of the harvest to come.
It Would Be Bun Season
That’s right, it would be Hot-Cross Bun season if we lived in the Northern Hemisphere. Easter falls during Ostara, which means Hot-Cross Buns galore, but it doesn’t feel right here. Even as a full-time practicing witch, I struggle with this. I try to align everything seasonally, but Hot-Cross Buns just feel like autumn to me, a treat for when the earth cools. Lately, though, I’ve embraced all things dandelion instead, and I hope to pass this love on to my children and convince my husband they’re not “weeds.”
I hope you try to incorporate some of these foods into your seasonal diet this year, and tag me on social media if you do!
Until then, may we Speak in Spells again soon.
